time babies on the TARDIS

“Hello baby,” he breathes the words out in wonder, staring down at the tiny bundle in his arms. She is a miracle, a tiny miraculous being that the Doctor can barely comprehend. How did they manage this?

River looks on, a tired smile on her face as she watches him cradle their brand-new daughter. “She’s beautiful,” she reaches across, stroking a fingertip over the soft hair on the baby’s tiny head, which he swears he can see the slightest curls in already. The thought makes him grin with joy.

“Course she is, she’s ours. No other possible outcome really.” His voice is smug but River simply laughs softly, her eyes shining with agreement. “What are we going to name you, little one?”

“Well I’ve had a few thoughts-” River begins and he looks up at her with raised brows.

“Well that’s rude.”

“What’s rude?” She asks incredulously and he bounces their daughter gently as he looks at River.

“Well don’t you think she should have some say in the matter? I mean she’s the one who has to live with the name for the rest of her natural life-“

“Right because there’s absolutely no precedence of changing your name in this family.” River observes dryly and he pauses, mid-sentence.

“Well, yes, but still. I think we should ask her. What is your name, poppet?” He adresses the baby and River rolls her eyes.

“You can’t speak baby, Doctor-“

“I can too, I speak everything. And shh, she’s thinking.” He shushes his wife and she arches a brow at him. “Family names? Well, I’m just Daddy. Oh I like that one - best title yet, I’d think. Mummy just calls me Doctor-“

“Among other things,” River mutters with an eyeroll and he glares at her.

“Hush now, we’re talking. Daddy-daughter bonding time you know.” He glances down at the baby again. “Where was I? Oh right - your Mummy has a brilliant name - River. Suits her too, much better than Melody ever did. You have a grandmum and a granddad, Amy and Rory. Well Amelia, really. And then there’s - oh? You like that do you?” He looks up at River with a grin. “She likes Amelia! Do you think Amy would mind?”

“Does it not matter if I mind?” River asks with a sigh, and the baby coos, waving her arms erratically. “I did just do all the hard work.”

“Oh Amelia, shush, your Mummy is just tired. It was hard work you know. Yes, I know it wasn’t exactly easy on your end either, poppet. Amelia Song. I like it. Oh you do too? Excellent.” He grins and River smiles reluctantly, moving aside as he sits next to her on the bed. “Mummy likes it too, Amelia. Don’t tell her I told you this,” he whispers to the baby, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head, “but your Mummy is a real pushover.”

“Oh I am, am I?” River looks over at him and he drops a kiss to her lips. They are both smiling when they part.
“Well, only for us.” He amends, and River leans down, giving Amelia a kiss too.

“Only for you,” she admits softly, and he smiles down at her. She rests her head against his shoulder, burrowing into his side and Amelia snuggles down in his arms, her limbs growing heavy as her eyes slide shut along with her mothers. His hearts feel like they could burst at any moment, and his ship hums gently, lulling them to sleep.

“All of us, together.” He whispers reverantly, looking around him with delight, his wife asleep on his shoulder, his daughter in his arms, and his ship surrounding them all.

“All my girls.”
